He has completed his course work for the Ph.D. in English Literature, and has done graduate work in Journalism at Indiana University. He worked as a journalist for a while before beginning a teaching career that lasted for 12 years.

In 1983 he left his position as an Assistant Professor of English at Bluffton College (now Bluffton University) to enter law school. After law school he was associated with Squire Sanders in Washington, D.C. and then Goodwin Procter in Boston, MA before opening his own practice in Southern California in 1990, where he specializes in Trusts & Estates law. He is admitted to both the Massachusetts and California Bars. He and his wife Heidi, a Director with Citibank, lived for four years in Europe (Germany and England), where Heidi was on assignment, before returning to Southern California in 2000.

In 2006 David and Heidi bought land in the Dundee Hills. They planted a small vineyard of Pinot Noir in 2008, and moved to Oregon permanently in 2010. David is now semi- retired, but maintains a core group of California clients, who often catch him on his cell phone while he is in the vineyard.
